Calling

Calling

All of our work is to be in response to God’s call on our life.

OUTLINE

PROBLEM

  • We admire people for what they do – we think if only we could do better…
  • Some people don’t work for the sake of what they do.  Dentists, lawyers…
  • army – they were not doing it for the pay but doing something that really needed to be done.

GOD

  • God’s calling. What does that mean?  Journey. Funeral home was not a good fit, but I regarded it as my calling [from God] for the time.
  • Mark 1:16-20 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.  “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him. When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets.  Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.
  • Fish for people?  A fishing beyond fishing.
  • God sees in you what you don’t see in yourself.  Many jobs are too small for our spirit.
  • But for many of us we can’t step away from our nets because we are too afraid of empty nets.
  • Until you step away, you will never find who God created you to be. A lot of people don’t.

APPLICATION

  • God has given each of us the ability to recognize something that the world needs.
  • For each of us there are skills and gifts that God gives us. What is it for? Why use it?
  • God calls us to a whole life, not just a job. Don’t reduce your life to a self serving job.
  • Have you ever thought that God is using you there?

VISION

  • Ignoring a calling can lead to depression, anger, frustration, and deep dissatisfaction with life.
  • There is an approach to work that comes from a place of peace with God
  • When our work is a calling, we work to please God, not our supervisor.
  • Going to work for someone you despise and regard as a fool?  Do as Jesus did.
  • He came to serve and die and found a life beyond death. Imagine what God has in store for you!
