Now That I Have Seen Him
“Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” (Luke 2:10-12)
“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men.” (Luke 2:14)
…and they [the shepherds] spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. (Luke 2:17-18)
“Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel.” (Luke 2:29-32)
The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. (Luke 2:33)
“This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed…” (Luke 2:34-35)
“And a sword will pierce your own soul too.” (Luke 2:35)
And the reason that we even bring up Simeon at all is this- The question that every person must answer at some point in their lives is: How will you respond to the truth that has been revealed through Jesus Christ?
“Where is the one who has been born King of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.” (Matthew 2:2)
“Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.” (Matthew 2:8)
On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, and of incense, and of myrrh. (Matthew 2:11)
…at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:10 KJV)
“Take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.” (Matthew 2:13)
“Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world!” (John 1:29)
Because the testimony of John the Baptist tells us why Jesus came to be born, and it tells us how we should respond to his story.
The shepherds said, “Now that I have seen him, I want give glory to God and tell others what I have seen.”
- And the wise men, what did they say? They were priests from another religion, and now their search for truth had brought them to a manger in Bethlehem. They recognized him for who he is, and they said, “Now that I have seen him, I want to honor him with a gift and offer him my worship.” And many of you will give gifts this week and this is where it started.
- Mary said, “Now that I have seen him, I treasure this moment, and my soul magnify’s the Lord.”
- Simeon said, “Now that I have seen him, my life is complete. I have seen God’s salvation, the glory of Israel and light to the Gentiles. Now your servant can depart in peace.”
- Anna said, “Now that I have seen him, I want to encourage others to hear his story.”
Now that you’ve heard it … now that you have seen him … what will be your response?
