THE MINDSET OF JESUS
Philippians 2:5-11
PROBLEM
Within two years, the claim of Jesus’ divinity had spread throughout the Mediterranean world. Had it been a false claim, the movement would never have gotten off the ground, but it proves he did.
Jews could never have seen God as a man.
The last people who could believe a human being could be the creator of the universe/God. Imagine the quality of his life, moral character, scrutiny, the miraculous power he had, and personal presence to convince thousands of people.
You must become more optimistic about your future.
GOD
Paul’s point is that Christ’s humility will bring unity to the church, and this is relevant to us today.
Humility is being honest about yourself. What you can and cannot do
Real humility is self-forgetfulness. When we are healthy, we don’t think about what is wrong with us. If you're ever thinking about your elbow, there's something wrong with your elbow.
It’s good to be humble, but don’t dishonor God’s power with low expectations.
Philippians 2:5-11
5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!
9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
APPLICATION
Why are you so pessimistic about changing this habit if he loves you?
If you are there more to meet your needs than their needs, the relationship will be destructive. In the end, you’ll both feel empty, and you'll blame each other.
Do you find it hard to relinquish your right to be mad at someone for the good of preserving a relationship? If we applied this mindset to marriage and other relationships, imagine what our lives would be like.
Charles Templeton - concerning Christ, He was the greatest human being who ever lived. Everything good I know, everything decent I know, everything pure I know, I learned from Jesus Christ. Tears welled up in his eyes when he said, “I miss him. I miss him.”
VISION
Harriet Rubin, it is time to tell the truth about the large number of people who have used all their means to achieve money, power, and glory and then self-destruct.
We try desperately to be somebody. We try desperately to be our own God and our king; therefore, God lets us fall to the bottom, and we don't even know who we are.
The minute you acknowledge your fall, he adopts us, gives us His name, accepts us, and brings us into His family. We get the name above every name.
If you say, "I've got to do what I have to do," I must find out what makes me happy. I must find out who I am; you won't even know who you are. If you empty yourself of yourself, you will find out who you are.
