Your Potential

Your Potential

Sometimes it’s when we are detoured and far from our comfort zones that we discover who we have become and who God is calling us to be.

Outline

Series: “Road Trip
Title: ‘Taking a Detour’
[ILLUS] – Personal story about my choice to go different route to see friends on our move across country…
– Truck broke down – Had to move all our household goods from one truck to another – Middle of ‘nowhere’ Alabama – WHAT A MESS!!! (8-10 hour detour)

Our future and destiny happens by the choices we make everyday!
[Set the story up of Jacob stealing the birth-rite & the First-born blessing from Esau]
– Esau began to scheme to kill Jacob… Jacob is on the run – He’s in a MESS!
God appears to Jacob in the middle of his mess! (He will do the same for us)

“What’s more, I am with you, and I will protect you wherever you go. One day I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have finished giving you everything I have promised you.” Genesis 28:15

POTENTIAL = The ability to become.
Who was Jacob? …He was a Con-Artist; Deceiver!
“And the Lord told her, “The sons in your womb will become two nations. From the very beginning, the two nations will be rivals. One nation will be stronger than the other; and your older son will serve your younger son.” Genesis 25:23
Jacob was born with the POTENTIAL to become a great man of God…
…YOU have a greater potential – JOHN 14:12

OK – How do we reach our potential?
1st – God wants us to see what we are really like.
Genesis 29 – Jacob is out-swindled by his uncle Laban…
However, It wasn’t until Jacob DECIDED TO CHOOSE his future and make a detour – That he walked into the future God really had for him!

Galatians 6:4-5 (Mess) – Make a careful exploration of who you are and the work you have been given, and then sink yourself into that. Don’t be impressed with yourself. Don’t compare yourself with others. Each of you must take responsibility for doing the creative best you can with your own life.

Genesis 32:24-28 – Jacob wrestles with God… “This left Jacob all alone in the camp, and a man came and wrestled with him until the dawn began to break. 25 When the man saw that he would not win the match, he touched Jacob’s hip and wrenched it out of its socket. 26 Then the man said, “Let me go, for the dawn is breaking!” But Jacob said, “I will not
let you go unless you bless me.” 27 “What is your name?” the man asked. He replied, “Jacob.” 28 “Your name will no longer be Jacob,” the man told him. “From now on you will be called Israel,[c] because you have fought with God and with men and have won.”

2nd – God wants us to admit what we really are.
– Jacob’s name revealed his character… Israel
= Power with God; One who struggles with God; One who rules with God.

BOTTOM LINE: When you really SEE who you are and when you really ADMIT who you are:
…YOU BEGIN TO TAKE ON THE CHARACTERISTIC OF CHRIST JESUS!
Galatians 5 – The Fruit (Character) of the Spirit:
– Love – Goodness – Joy – Faithfulness – Peace – Gentleness – Patience – Self-control – Kindness
This is how we become the “light of the world”…
