Praying For Others

Praying For Others

When we genuinely love people, we desire for them far more than is within our power to give, and that is what causes us to pray.

OUTLINE

PROBLEM

  • Sometimes we don’t grow because we are too focused on ourselves, what it means to pray for others and how we grow closer to God when we do that.
  • Today we are going to talk about praying. Prayer is vast.  Today we are zeroing in on how to pray for others which always bring me closer to God.
  • Consider the people in your life. If we genuinely love people, we desire for them far more than it is within our power to give, and that is what causes us to pray.
  • You are probably here today because someone prayed for you.  99% chance it is true.

GOD

  • Praying is a learning process. Occasional joggers do not suddenly enter an Olympic marathon. God always meets us where we are and slowly moves us along into a closer relationship.
  • James 5:16  Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.
  • 1 Corinthians 3:9 For we are co-workers in God’s service
  • When you begin to pray for the person who is going through times of distress, you are becoming a prayer partner with Christ. It’s not just up to God.

APPLICATION

  • The beginning point in learning to pray for others is to listen for guidance. What does God want for their life? Not what you want for their life.  Married people know this.
  • Galatians 6:2. Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. Sometimes you can’t do anything physical to help.  Only pray. Pray first.
  • Experience of people praying for me.
  • Howard Hendricks – Years ago in a church in Dallas we were having trouble finding a teacher for a junior high boys class. Th  e list of prospects had only one name — and when they told me who it was I said, “You’ve got to be kidding.” But I couldn’t have been more wrong about that young man. He took the class and revolutionized it. I was so impressed I invited him to my home for lunch and asked him the secret of his success. He pulled out a little black book. On each page he had a small picture of one of the boys, and under the boy’s name were comments like “having trouble in arithmetic,” or “comes to church against parents’ wishes,” or “would like to be a missionary some day, but doesn’t think he has what it takes.” “I pray over those pages every day,” he said, “and I can hardly wait to come to church each Sunday to see what God has been doing in their lives.”

VISION

  • On one level we may be thinking about all the demands of life. But deep within, we may also be aware of God’s presence. Everyone can talk about one thing and think about another.
  • Closing – very little of what I’ve said can be accomplished without a small group. We are a church of small groups. One group is fasting for a group member to get through a hard phase.
