Peters Meltdown

Peter’s Meltdown

Matthew 26:69-75

PROBLEM

The apostles were very vulnerable in when telling their experiences with Jesus

No disciple loved Jesus as much as Peter and no disciple failed Jesus as much as Peter.

GOD

All 4 of the gospels give a lot of detail about this brief interaction

Last supper > prediction > Gethsemane > arrested > fled > Sanhedrin

Matthew 26:69-75

69 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. “You also were with Jesus of Galilee,” she said.

70 But he denied it before them all. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.

71 Then he went out to the gateway, where another servant girl saw him and said to the people there, “This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.”

72 He denied it again, with an oath: “I don’t know the man!”

73 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, “Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.”

74 Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!”

75 Immediately a rooster crowed. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.

APPLICATION

God created you unique to meet a need only you can meet. Square peg in a square hole

We want to become like others so we can get what they get

Peter did not want to be crucified and his loyalty to Jesus was conditional

Peter had a second chance and did not fail

VISION

Jesus’ last glance- He knew that Peter would betray him and saw his great future

Make a full surrender to Jesus today. It will be the first of many surrenders, but this one sets the direction for eternity.

Whatever you want me to do, I’ll do it.

And when you sin, and you catch that glance of Jesus, what he sees is the man he is making you to be.
