The Meaning of Pentecost
Acts 2:1-4 2 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.
Explanation of Pentecost
Pentecost – is not a religion “I’m pentacostal” it simply means 50
50 days after Passover
God is so cool like this, here the whole Jewish world is celebrating God giving the law of God, the law of God to people and here He is giving the presence of God in a very similar fashion.
A cloud descended with loud noise and fire. God wrote His law on tablets of stone. Don’t be so determinate on timing…
This time: The Holy Spirit descended with loud sound and fire. God wrote His law on our hearts.
Acts 2:12 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”
One was external (writing on stone) and one was internal (coming of the Holy spirit)
God knew that he needed more than just having rules and regulations. He needed a change hearts.
I’m praying, start with me.
What does this mean? That’s the question we’re going to get into today. What does this mean for us today in 2022?
To fully understand what this means for us, we need to back up a few books and look at the words of Jesus who was giving His followers, and us, some bread crumbs of what this would look like when the Holy Spirit came.
They were gathered in the same room -50 days earlier with Jesus
5 times Jesus says what the Holy Spirit will do, and we’re going to get real practical and look at these in the form of a prayer.
John 14:16 And I will pray the to Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever.
1. Holy Spirit comfort me
John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
- God can heal us of our hurts
- Had a mentor encourage me to “Look for it” keep your eyes open to where God is coming along side you.
2. Holy Spirit reveal truth to me.
John 14:26 The counselor, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send In my name will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I've said to you.”
- Pastor Greg and I try to teach and engage your minds and hearts but we need more
- Friend- prayed a prayer who asked God to reveal any lies she was believing- it was about herself being worthy of being used by God.
Hebrews 4:12-13 For the word of God is alive and powerful It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between the soul and the spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable.
John 15:26 “When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the spirit of Truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me.”
3. Holy Spirit convict me
John 16:8 "When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment."
Psalm 139:23-24 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.
- We don’t do this out of fear
- Here’s what you need to know, he convicts you, he never condemns you.
- Challenges you with love that “this” can get better.
4. Holy Spirit use me
Acts 1:8 “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
- List some examples of how we’re asking God to use us.
- Personal example of asking God to use me to bring salvation to 3 specific people in my life right now. Don’t always know what say- but I DO know that I want to be ready.
- Don’t have to wait till you get your life all together
5. Holy Spirit guide me.
John 16:13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
Isaiah 30:21 Whether you turn to the right or to the left. Your ears will hear a voice behind you saying, This is this way. Walk in it.
