No Ordinary Family

No Ordinary Family

The sovereign loving God put you into your family for you to be a source of hope and compassion to them, even though they are not compassionate towards you.  Your family is not to dominate your story, God is and he loves you and died for you to be his child.

Sermon Outline

George burns – happiness is having a large loving close knit family in another city.

The Bible starts and ends with family.

Creation was not ultimately good until God gave Adam a family.

In Revelation, the final scene is all redeemed humanity gathered together as a family enjoying a feast as they begin eternity.

But the Bible is filled with stories of troubled families.

Most of Genesis is about Jacob who had a very dysfunctional family.

If you have a troubled family history, you are where you belong.  You are welcome here.

God’s invites everyone in our ordinary family to join his blessed family.
God has a heart to see broken families come together.

Who gets to be a part of the family?  Romans 10:13 All who call on the name of the lord. All are invited. Unchurched, divorced, blended, those with baggage, those who have been to Harvard and those who have not ever been to school, Americans, every nation, every political persuasion and more.

What is the difference between the ordinary family and the blessed family?
Blessed Family is characterized by Sacrifice, Inclusive, Adoption, Diversity, Unity, Full of fathers, mothers brothers and sisters.

Ordinary/broken Family is characterized by Selfishness, Divisiveness, Having Preferences,  Uniformity, and many Abandoned Orphans.
Which describes your family? I have a lot of the ordinary family in me.

In Genesis 45:5-8, Joseph says to his brothers- God being the super architect of his life, the ones who abused him…

And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you.  For two years now there has been famine in the land, and for the next five years there will be no plowing and reaping. But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance. “So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God.

Joseph uses his family experience as a means to bless his biological family.  Instead of using it as a way to retaliate against his family, he uses it as a way to  bless his family. The gifts of his heavenly family enabled him to bless his biological family.

This sovereign loving God put you into your family.

You are now a source of compassion even though they are not compassionate towards you.

Your family doesn’t dominate your story, God does and he loves you and sent his son for you.

Your godly family gives you the tools to be a blessing to your biological family.

We love to zoom in on people‘s weaknesses. But then we forfeit the entire landscape of their life. We like to focus on one thing that is bad but if we zoom out we can gain an godly perspective about people.

The Wall Street Journal featured a story about an 85-year-old man named Al Golden, who still chokes up when he talks about his twin brother Elliott, who recently died. The brothers shared a room growing up, graduated from the same college, and then married within a month of each other. Yet Al still remembers how their father often compared them, asking one or the other, “How come you got a B and your brother got an A?” Elliott became a lawyer and eventually a state Supreme Court judge. Al sold life insurance. Al says he always envied his brother’s status and secretly took pleasure in knowing at least he was a better fisherman and owned a bigger boat. Even as adults, there was a lot of comparison and competition. Then one day, Elliott accused Al of not doing enough to take care of their sick mother. After that, Al didn’t speak to his brother for more than a year. Elliot repeatedly reached out to him, but Al ignored him. Then one day, Al received an email from Elliot telling a story about two brothers who had a stream dividing their properties. One brother hired a carpenter to build a fence along the stream, but the carpenter built a bridge by mistake. Al thought about the email, then wrote back, “I’d like to walk over the bridge.”
