Luke 10:38-42
PROBLEM
Patron saint of 21st century “worried and distracted by many things”
Driving through life with distractions. It’s not just dangerous, it’s exhausting
When we are distracted we’re prevented from developing an interior life
GOD
38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him.
39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said.
40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things,
42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
v 40 Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made
Distracted - to be pulled away or to be pulled apart
Religion - re-ligare literally means to be re-attached
Protein molecule called laminin, a cell adhesion molecule. glue of the human body – cross Col 1:17
APPLICATION
Being manipulated by something within her that needs everything to be just right
Motivation-brother lawrence, focus on love and character of God
Present- Walter, unto God, valleys undiscovered by human eyes…
Purpose-to serve not be served, live out the grace that saved you
VISION
If we asked Jesus which example we are to follow, the active Good Samaritan or the contemplative Mary, Jesus would probably say “Yes.”
That’s what Mary was doing in this reading – re-attaching herself to Jesus
Her worries show that her service needs to be grounded in Mary’s kind of love for him
