I Feel Let Down by God

I Feel Let Down by God

PROBLEM What benefit is God to you?

How our relationship with God is like marriage. Contract v covenant. Called off example, vows.

What does it mean to trust God? Our end of the deal is to live like Jesus.  But what is God’s end? That’s a bit confusing.  What are we trusting God for? To provide and protect. But we lock our doors at night. Our trust is in your locks. Protection- insurance. Act of God.  insurance against God. God forbid.

We want a magic formula. If you’re not being protected because you don’t have enough faith.
Example: Haiti earthquake. Million lost homes.  300K died. Buried alive. 2 nights after the earthquake CNN. tent city. Had nothing. Next drink, meal. Praising God. “Our God is faithful. He is our strength and refuge, our help in times of trouble.”  Don’t say they didn’t have enough faith for protection. Most faithful on the planet.  Level of faith and praise.

Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

3 points.
First: I believe it

Second: The context is

Jeremiah 29:10-14
This is what the Lord says: “When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my good promise to bring you back to this place. For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back from captivity] I will gather you from all the nations and places where I have banished you,” declares the Lord, “and will bring you back to the place from which I carried you into exile.”

OT had a contract. NT has a covenant.
OT was getting out of trouble. NT gets through trouble with a peace that transcends understanding.

Philippians 4:4-7
Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Peace in marriage in tough times.

Third: I know the plans. Plans are not a script, they are an intention.  Jeremiah’s future didn’t work out too well.  Babylon- BC 586-516, Persia- 539, Greek- 333 Roman-4, destroyed in 70 AD.
God doesn’t plan evil, but people do.
Not everything happens according to God’s plan, but God has a plan for everything that happens.
Don’t blame God because he’s a junk artist.  Something beautiful.

VISION- Covenant is a willingness to live with God in the face of uncertainty

So what are we trusting God for if not provision or protection?

First – God is always perfect and loving. God was in Jesus. In every situation, he maximizes the good. That is why the Haitians sang. If we look for faithfulness, we will see it. Look for the good.

Second – the only guarantee is that we will have trouble. But it won’t always be like this. That is the promise of God. Earthquakes. Death, Cancer, evil people, Everything will someday be united in Jesus.

Run that vision. You can trust God for that. Everything will be woven together.
