John 16:20-24, 33.
For Joy in a Crisis…
- Look for Jesus
- Think about Jesus
- Pray in Jesus’ name
- Be amazed by Jesus
22 Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.
a fascinating thought,
it’s not going to be easy.
nothing will take that joy away.
For Joy in a Crisis… Look for Jesus
Joy can be subdued. It can even get swamped by sorrow, but… it comes back. But you have to think it back.
Christians can actually have a lot of sorrow.
What’s coming will make you forget your suffering.
21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world.
Peace and trouble do not negate one another.
Christian joy is something that takes you through it, keeps it from going bad.
Jesus keeps the sorrow from making you bitter, hopeless.
Being a Christian, the sorrow pushes you more into your joy.
When you stand with others in their suffering you are standing with Jesus
Who is suffering that you can stand with?
For Joy in a Crisis… Think About Jesus
The world’s advice
1. Forget the pain, what drink? Party, overwork, have an affair.
2. They try to avoid it. do anything to keep it. manipulate…
3. Turn your mind away from the pain; think more positive…
Tolstoy – if when you die you just don’t exist anymore, why go on?
Don’t think about it, instead go to the beach, go shopping. You’re thinking too much. just enjoy life.
Life is only livable if you just don’t think too much about it?
The world’s peace and joy comes from not thinking too much…
If you’re a Christian in this room and you don’t have a lot of joy, think about what Jesus has given you.
The world’s peace is a stupid peace.
Christian peace and joy is intelligence
Reject the way the world deals with pain and tell them about eternity and the hope we have in Jesus.
For Joy in a Crisis… Pray in Jesus’ Name
I did so many things for God and yet God was not answering any of my prayers.
I was very upset. My pastor told me, “You’re not going in Jesus name, you’re going in your own name.”
23-24 Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.
God does not owe you anything. Anger almost always comes from “I deserve this”.
God is as desirous to fulfill your desire as if it was Jesus himself asking!
God will give you whatever you asked for, if you knew everything he knows.
Pray for others from the perspective of Jesus
For Joy in a Crisis… Be amazed by Jesus
How do I enhance my joy? Wonder about what Jesus has done, is doing and will do for you.
One joy he didn’t have before he came to earth? A relationship with us.
Hebrews 12:2 for the joy set before him, he endured the cross, scorning its shame…
John 16:33 records Jesus’ final words to his disciples
33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
NOT – “Have courage—you will overcome the world.”
NOT – …I have overcome the world—and you can too,”
But – “Have courage! I have faced your enemy and vanquished…
I have fought your battle on the same battleground where you fight. You can never do it; but I have done it and I can do it again in you. Abide in me and my victory is yours.
Don’t just say, give me joy. Wonder and be amazed at what Jesus has given you.
Pray for someone to open a door for you to tell them about what Jesus has done for you and can do for them
I’m going to close with the ways followers of Jesus can live the lessons from this passage:
- Who is suffering that you can stand with?
- Reject the way the world deals with pain and tell them about eternity and the hope we have in Jesus.
- Pray for others from the perspective of Jesus
- Pray for someone to open a door for you to tell them about what Jesus has done for you and can do for them
