Friendship

Friendship

Friendship is not something we do. Friendship is about who we need to be

  • You are who you are because of the people who have been in your life
  • Your relationship decisions are the most important decisions in your life

FRIENDSHIPS ARE HARD

  • Don’t “just happen”
  • Relationships take work
  • I live with an angel. It takes work.  The longer you are married the more different you become
  • Sin creates relational isolation, separation, and alienation from God, as well as from one another.

FRIENDSHIPS WERE IMPORTANT TO JESUS

John 15:12,17 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.  Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.  You are my friends if you do what I command …This is my command: Love each other.

Let that sink in. Jesus calls you his friend.

Exists when two people, bound together by a common faith, follow Jesus with intentionality and vulnerability.

3 THINGS ABOUT FRIENDSHIP

One-sided relationships

  • Friendship is mutual
  • A normal part of life as a Christian
  • expecting others to just know what I need

Restore broken relationships

  • Forgiveness is a daily decision
  • If I don’t agree with you I hate you
  • My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.

Nurture the real important relationships

  • Friendship is not something we do. Friendship is about who we need to be.
  • Develop the right relationships within the church.  Small groups
    • …What? You too? I thought I was the only one
    • Right group… I am really afraid about…
  • I need to grow a little each day. I don’t want to be the person I was yesterday. I want to be the person that is following Jesus a bit closer everyday

THE IMPORTANCE OF FRIENDSHIPS TO US

  • What is more important than friendships?
  • Possess a commonality …Despite enormous differences in class, temperament, culture, race, sensibility, and personal history, there is an underlying commonality that is more powerful than them all.
  • I want you to catch a vision—not merely enhancing our individual lives, but an essential instrument in the accomplishment of God’s purposes.
  • This is why to call another “friend” is no small praise, but the very essence of our faith.
