Are you the one? Simeon

ARE YOU THE ONE? SIMEON

Luke 2:25-33

PROBLEM

Do You See What I See lyrics

Our whole life is a season of waiting for the last Advent, when there will be a new heaven and a new earth." – Dietrich Bonhoeffer, God Is In The Manger.

Imagine how Simeon must have felt. God told him a promise, but he had to wait.

GOD

Simeon would have been a little boy when the Romans conquered Jerusalem in 63 BC. General Pompey surrounded the city, destroying much of it and killing 12,000 Jews. Until 1948

Because the firstborn son was to be dedicated to God, 40 days later, they would bring an offering to redeem the child for themselves—at least temporarily responsible for the child, knowing he’s God’s.

Three times, the Holy Spirit is mentioned in conjunction with Simeon.

Luke 2:25-35

Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him.

It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah.

Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required,

Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:

“Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace.

For my eyes have seen your salvation,

which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:

a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel.”

The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him.

APPLICATION

Simeon called him the light of the world.  John 8:12: I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.

A Christian has been transferred from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light.

Hope in Hebrew and Greek both are often closely related to hope, the joyful anticipation.

The waiting room of life. We never get the entire picture.

One thing we all have in common is that waiting is a part of life, but so is the presence of God, and because of that, your waiting will never be wasted.

VISION

Question. Why would a devout and righteous man need salvation? God reaching down.

Waiting on God is never a waste of time. While we wait, he works. God is praised in your waiting.

Psalm 27:14: Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.
